Boundaries :
 
Dibrugarh district on the north; Arunachal Pradesh and Dibrugarh district on the east; Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on the south; and Sivasagar District on the west.

      Charaideo district was formally declared a new district of the State on 15 August 2015 by the Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi. It curve out of carved out of Sivasagar district and Sonari became its headquarters. It comes under Upper Assam divisions. 
 
       The site of Charaideo, is 28 km east of Sivasagar town which was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom established by the first Ahom king Sukapha in1253. It is famous for the numerous Maidums or burial vaults of Ahom kings and other members of the royal families. It resembles to some extent the pyramids of Egypt. The site has had some archaeological works. The Archaeological Department has developed the site into an archaeological spot for tourists by covering some of the Maidams.
